Most maintenance is negotiable. Timing belts aren't. On an interference engine — most of them — the belt is the only thing keeping pistons and valves out of each other's real estate. When it snaps, valves bend, and a few-hundred-dollar service becomes an engine rebuild. There's no warning symptom; the "symptom" is the mileage or the years on the sticker (rubber ages even on cars that sit, which is very relevant to garaged classics).

Intervals run roughly 60,000–100,000 miles or 5–10 years, whichever comes first. Don't know when yours was last done? On an older vehicle with no records, the honest answer is: it's due now.

What the job involves

• Removing accessory belts, covers, and often engine mounts to reach the timing case
• Setting the engine to timing marks, replacing the belt, tensioner, and idlers as a kit — reusing an old tensioner with a new belt is false economy
• Usually replacing the water pump at the same time when it's belt-driven: the labor overlaps almost completely, so the add-on costs parts only
• Rotating through by hand, re-verifying marks, and test-running before buttons go back on

This is precision work, but it's hand-tool precision — well within driveway scope for most engines. Where the range moves: transverse engines in tight bays and V6 configurations sit at the top of it; old inline-fours at the bottom.
